Chimney repairs and roof weatherproofing
Chimney stacks are exposed on all sides and include several details that can allow water into a building when they deteriorate. The masonry, mortar, pots, flaunching and surrounding flashings should be considered together. Our chimney work service on the Isle of Wight covers enquiries for repairs and maintenance at roof level.
Investigating chimney leaks
A damp area near a chimney does not automatically mean the lead flashing is defective. Water entry may involve the masonry, mortar, the top of the stack or more than one detail. Describe when the problem occurs and whether you have noticed loose fragments, visible cracks or a displaced pot from the ground.
Chimney repointing, flaunching and masonry repairs
Repair materials and methods should be compatible with the existing stack. The extent of deterioration and any movement influence whether a local repair is suitable. Work should also account for the chimney’s use and any heritage requirements. Structural instability needs appropriate assessment before a routine repair is attempted.
Chimney flashings and roof coverings
The junction between a chimney and the roof needs to shed water while accommodating the way the materials behave. Defective flashings, damaged slates or tiles and problems behind the stack may need to be addressed as a coordinated repair. Where leadwork is proposed, the quotation explains the extent of that work.
Chimney repairs and flue safety
Roof-level repairs are not a substitute for chimney sweeping, appliance servicing or a flue safety assessment. Tell us whether the chimney is in use before any work is planned. If materials are loose or the stack appears unstable, keep people clear and seek urgent help. Access, weather and the condition of the structure determine when work can safely proceed.
